Why We Built Our Own Under Hood Light Kit

TEQ Offroad designed this kit from scratch instead of repackaging a generic LED strip. It started with the harness. Every braided harness is made in-house with the fuse and kill switch already built in, and it connects straight to the battery, so there is nothing extra to source.

The goal is simple: lift the hood after dark and see the whole engine bay without holding a flashlight.

Design Details Under the Hood

The strip, the switch, and the harness each do one job.

One Long 40" Strip

A single 40" strip spreads about 1300 lumens across the bay, so the light is even rather than a bright spot with dark corners. Its housing and adhesive are made to resist water and heat.

Automatic On and Off

The hood pin switch lights the strip when the hood opens and shuts it off when the hood closes. Flip the kill switch when you want the system fully off.

Mounted With 3M VHB

Six 3M VHB zip-tie mounts and zip ties hold the strip in place, and the harness runs to the battery. Plan on roughly half an hour from box to light.

Under Hood Light Kit Questions

Fit and ordering
Will it work if my truck is not a Toyota?
Yes. It suits any vehicle with an opening hood. Pick your vehicle from the list when you order, or choose Non-Toyota.
Power and wiring
What does the hood pin switch do?
It is the automatic switch. Opening the hood turns the light on, and closing it turns the light off.
Where does the kit get power?
Directly from the battery. The harness already carries an inline fuse and the kill switch, so you do not need to add your own.
Can I shut it off completely?
Yes. The kill switch on the harness cuts power to the light, for example if the truck will sit for a while or you are working with the hood open for a long time.
Parts and service
What if I damage the harness or the switch later?
Replacement parts are sold separately, including the pin switch, the harness, and the plastic kill switch housing.
